The true story of Nicaraguan tobacco and coffee cannot be told from a distance. It must be experienced where the soil is rich, the altitude is high, and the craftsmanship has been refined over generations.
From November 24 to 29, we are taking an exclusive group into the beating heart of the country’s finest yields: the volcanic highlands of Matagalpa and the legendary tobacco capital of Estelí.
Two Capitals, One Shared Earth
This specialized tour bridges the two distinct pillars of Nicaraguan artisanal culture:
Matagalpa (The Coffee Highlands)
Nestled in the cool, high-altitude mountains, this region produces some of the world’s most nuanced single-origin beans. Guests will explore the shade-grown plantations, trace the harvesting process, and sample fresh roasts crafted to complement full-bodied cigars.
The misty highlands of Matagalpa have produced coffee that rivals the finest growing regions of Central America. The altitude—often above 1,200 meters—slows the ripening process, allowing the beans to develop complex, layered flavors. Walking through these plantations, you understand why coffee from this region is sought after by specialty roasters worldwide.
Estelí (The Tobacco Capital)
Moving into the famous valley of Estelí, the focus shifts to the art of premium cigars. From the curing barns to the rolling tables, you will witness the precise fermenting and blending techniques that make this valley globally revered.
Estelí’s volcanic soil and microclimate create tobacco unlike any other region. The families who work these fields carry generations of knowledge in their hands. This tour gives you direct access to that world—not as an outsider watching a display, but as someone invited into a living, working tradition.
The Art of the Northern Pairing
Throughout the six-day journey, the focus remains on the interplay between freshly roasted high-altitude coffee and aged Nicaraguan leaf. Understanding how the microclimates of Matagalpa and Estelí shape their respective crops provides an entirely new perspective on flavor profiles, oil concentration, and aging potential.
You’ll discover how a coffee’s acidity complements a cigar’s earthiness. How the sweetness in a Matagalpa bean echoes the complexity in an Estelí blend. How the terroir of each region speaks through its respective crop—and how, together, they tell a complete story of what Nicaragua’s highlands can produce.
This isn’t a tour where you’re rushed through tasting notes. This is time spent in the places where the work happens, conversations with the people who understand these crops in their bones, and moments to develop your own palate and perspective on what makes Nicaraguan coffee and cigars exceptional.
